Blackamoor Lane Remediation Project

Welcome to the website for the Blackamoor Lane Remediation Project, which has been set up to keep residents informed of works and progress at the site on Blackamoor Lane.

The site, previously known as Badnell’s Pit, is part of a former gravel pit, which was worked up until the late 1940’s. The site was then used as an unlicensed tip for industrial waste between the 1950’s and 1970’s. Tipping was uncontrolled and today, the site is affected by contamination.

Following the refusal of a planning application to remove all contaminated material from the site, a Public Inquiry was held in 2006 by an independent Inspector who determined that the site could be cleaned up safely.

Once the site has been remediated, it will be developed to provide 448 new homes in accordance with a planning permission granted by the Secretary of State in January 2009.

This website has been set up to keep local people fully informed about the remediation project and also the approved residential scheme.

The detail provided on this website includes planning, technical and programme information, which we hope residents will find useful in understanding how the project will be undertaken.

Information Centre - Update On Opening Hours

Following the slightly revised timetable over the Easter period, the Information Centre will now revert back to its original opening times, being 2-4pm on Mondays and 9-11am on Saturdays.

Update On Main Works 04/05/11

Progress with the excavation and infilling works in April has been good with the majority of the material now removed from Grid Cells G2 and H2. These cells are located in the south west corner of the site.

We anticipate that these two cells will be completed shortly with activity then moving to Grid Cell C2.

In May, after the completion of Grid Cell C2, the excavation will move back to Grid Cell C1 (anticipated week commencing 9th May), which residents will note was the cell which was delayed so that additional mitigation measures could be established to deal with the potentially odorous material.

The details of the odour suppressant system have now been agreed with the Council. The mitigation measures comprise temporary fencing clad with debris netting erected around the northern, eastern and southern edges of Grid Cell C1. Atomiser nozzles would be located on the fencing at 3m intervals and will be more effective at dealing with any potential odour closer to its source.
